What is NDIS?

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aims at funding individuals with permanent and significant disability in Australia, helping them to participate in the community and live their daily lives easily with support provision.

Eligibility

  • If you have a permanent or a significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities, you are eligible to access NDIS

  • You can also access NDIS if you are between 7 and 65

  • Being an Australian citizen, holding a permanent visa or holding a Protected Special Category Visa, also makes you eligible for NDIS

  • The National Disability Insurance Scheme is designated for people with a disability, under the age of 65, to take part in everyday activities.
  • An eligibility for NDIS will make you able to access the fundamental and reasonable supports by the funding that you may need to live your life and achieve your goals to the fullest.
  • NDIS was developed by The Federal government to follow a fair practice of funding provision to the people with disabilities, unlike previously, where some would get a good amount while others will be funded none, depending on the way they developed their disabilities, where they got their disabilities, et cetera.

  • Every NDIS participant has an individual plan that lists their goals and the funding they have received. Every participant uses their funding to purchase supports and services that will help them achieve their goals.
  • Yes. You will receive funding annually to purchase services and supports. You then have the option to self-manage and claim directly from the NDIS, or you can have some help to manage the plan and funding. If you do not want to engage someone to help you manage the plan, you are able to self manage.

  • Yes, it is possible to subject to certain conditions. If there is a significant change in your life and disability before the end of your NDIS plan, you can reach out to your NDIA planner and seek an early review.
  • The Disability Support Pension along with other income supports and payments such as the Carer Payment, Carer Supplement, Carer Allowance and Child Disability Assistance Payment are entirely separate to the NDIS.
  • The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is the new way of providing support for Australians with disability, their families and carers. The NDIS gives funding directly to its participants so they can openly choose and control which providers they engage to access services.
  • NDIS will provide you with every support that is reasonable and necessary. It’s especially true if your needs are not currently met. Therefore, it is advisable before the NDIS meeting to collate thoughts regarding your requirements and how you can improve your life.

  • For this, you should undergo preliminary planning regarding your lifestyle, life goals and the support you may require before the meet. With this preparation, you will get a clear idea regarding what you need from the NDIS.
  • Yes, you can take along your family member, support person for the planning meeting for the support. You can also take your friend along whom you think can support you during the session. It will lead to better outcomes for the planning meeting.
  • All your current supports will continue, and nothing will happen to those supports. Those pre-existing supports will stop only once you have an approved NDIS plan.
  • The NDIS plan runs for 12 months. However, as the plan approaches its end, i.e. six months before, NDIA contacts you for a review meeting next year.

    If you are not happy with your plan, you can request a review. For this, you can contact your planner or the NDIA and discuss the things that you are not happy about. You can opt for the internal review process with the NDIA for this purpose.
    You must be careful with the review process and ensure that it has all the supports that successfully meet your requirements.

    The participant can bring along anyone they would like to the planning meeting. This can include family, friends, support workers, and advocates.

    No. NDIS is separate from the Disability Support Pension, and it will not be affected if you have a NDIS package.

    If you do not agree with any aspect of your plan you can request an internal review of the decision by the NDIA. If you do not agree with the outcome of the review, you can request a review of the matter by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT).

    If you have requested a review of your plan you are able to continue using the plan until you get a decision.
